Elo’s Cakes NZ is an inclusive bakery which works very hard to find the most suitable way to include Sophie in daily tasks.
Sophie is a 21 year old girl with down syndrome who has been working at Elos’s Cakes NZ for almost a year.
She has done every single task: mixing ingredients, doing the shopping, counting money and also serving customers at local markets.
Most tasks involve fun, however some are tedious or even boring, as she has said. In ‘typical’ working environments, everyone has to do a variety of duties and Sophie is not the exception.
Sophie gets paid just like everyone else. This is not charity and nobody is taking any advantage.
After almost a year, Sophie has learnt a lot and improved in many ways. We work really well together and we are so proud.
Elo’s Cakes gives opportunity to people with different skills (we do not like the word disabled) to be part of our little team and help everyone use their talents.
When I ask Sophie what do you like the most about working, she said FUN!
Let’s start the celebration with Elo’s Cakes NZ and have FUN!
